Emily Brand with Robert Sackville-West

The Fall of the House of Byron: Scandal and Seduction in Georgian England

Saturday 9th May : 15.30 – 16.30

Adult : £14.00

Location: DFN Marquee

Emily Brand follows the fates of Lord Byron’s ancestors over three generations; the doomed romantic, the childless mother, the suffering navy wife, the debauched heir, the gallivanting warrior, the handsome but impoverished conman. The Byrons played out their fall from grace in rural Nottinghamshire, the gentlemen’s clubs of Georgian London and in the glamour of pre-revolutionary France - as the comforts they had enjoyed disappeared from their grasp. Their unfathomable levels of scandal and impropriety - elopement, murder, kidnapping, adultery, coercion, and near-death naval experiences - influenced the life and poetry of Lord Byron for posterity.

Emily Brand is a writer, historian and genealogist. Robert Sackville-West is the author of the critically acclaimed Inheritance: The Story of Knole and the Sackvilles and The Disinherited.
