The Tea Room & Gift Shop

If you’re looking for the best way to spend a summer’s afternoon - look no further than a traditional English Afternoon Tea at Chiddingstone Castle.  A warm welcome awaits visitors to the delightful cosy Tea Room, situated on the south side of the castle, where you will find a choice of comfortable seating either inside beside the range cooker in the former Buttery, or outside in the sunny, sheltered Grade II listed courtyard. We are proud to serve delicious homemade cakes, scones, light lunches, cream teas, coffee, tea and locally produced wine, cider, fruit juices and ice creams. The Tea Room is not only very popular with our visitors, but also with local residents who will often stop for a reviving coffee and cake or a light lunch whilst walking, cycling or exploring. There is no obligation to pay for admission to the castle to visit the Tea Room or the grounds, so we have many regulars! Dogs are welcome, on leads, in the Tea Room courtyard.

A kind email testimonial from a happy visitor in July 2016: We bought my Mother in Law to the castle for afternoon tea on Sunday  3 July to celebrate her 86th birthday.  I just wanted to thank all the staff, from the young volunteer on the door that allowed us to go through the castle to the tea room (my Mother in law can not walk far), to the wonderful staff in the tea room itself.  It could not have been more perfect and nothing was too much trouble and the tea was delicious.Thank you so much. (Mr and Mrs D E, Kent)

Our freshly-baked scones are legendary, the clotted cream delivered weekly from Cornwall and all our teas are served on traditional vintage china. A changing seasonal menu can include homemade soup, a choice of ploughman’s lunches, sandwiches and local sausage baguettes served with homemade onion marmalade. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the prices excellent – the classic Chiddingstone Cream Tea being only £6.50 per person for 2 scones, clotted cream, homemade jam and tea or coffee per person.  It is not always necessary to pre-book for a Cream Tea in the Tea Room.

Pre-booked Full Afternoon Teas are also on offer (sandwiches, scones, cream, cakes etc.) for £15.50 per person and special celebratory teas for large parties can be arranged in advance also. It is essential that Full Afternoon Teas are booked in advance - by calling the Castle office on 01892 872746 between 10am and 4pm on Mondays to Thursdays only.

Gift Vouchers for Teas are also available for that unusual present or surprise - please see the panel opposite for details.  Please also note the panel for details of how to reserve your Virgin Experience Traditional Tea in a Castle.

Groups are always welcome to our Tea Room – if you are a large party, please book your refreshments in advance.

The Gift Shop is located across the courtyard from the Tea Room in the castle’s unusual Well Tower. A great location to source a memento of your visit to Chiddingstone or to buy a present, the Gift Shop stocks antiques, books, cards, bags, souvenirs, soaps, candles, vintage goods, plants and much more. We are particularly proud that the majority of goods on sale in the Gift Shop are produced and sourced from within Kent and Sussex.  For the 2016 season we have opened an additional small shop (adjacent to the Gift Shop) filled with a assortment of antiquities and antique glassware and a wide variety of second-hand books that have been kindly donated to the charitable trust that runs the Castle.

Opening Times:

The Tea Room and Gift Shop are open only when the Castle is open – April to the end of October, Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Bank Holidays ONLY, 11am to 5pm. Visitors to the Tea Room and Gift Shop are welcome without an admission ticket to the Castle on most open days.  However, please note that access to the Tea Room and Gift Shop is not possible on our Special Event Days without an admission ticket, ie Wedding Fair, Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival, Summer Vintage Fair, Country Fair and Christmas Fair.  See our What’s On page for details of these.
