Local History

Chiddingstone Castle is situated in the heart of the village of Chiddingstone, much of which is owned by the National Trust.

The village is comprised of a row of attractive Tudor houses with references dating back to 814AD.

Owned for many years by the Streatfeild family, Chiddingstone Village was the centre of the parish of Chiddingstone, which also includes the Hoath, the Causeway, Wellers Town and Threshers Fields.

The exhibition in the Great Hall explores the history of the village and its people, and the wider community of Chiddingstone. Among the themes covered are the origins of Chiddingstone village, the history of the church and the buildings on the High Street.  There is also information on local industries such as hop picking and cricket ball making, and leisure activities such as cricket and stool ball.
