Japanese Stroll Garden

The Denys Eyre Bower Bequest, a registered charity since 1984, invite you to support our vision of creating a landmark Japanese Stroll Garden here at Chiddingstone Castle. We plan to break the garden design into manageable projects that can be sponsored by businesses or private individuals.

We are looking for:

  • Donations of lanterns, benches, trees or plants
  • Sponsorship of the pergola walk, or granite pathway
  • Sponsorship of a distinct part of the garden
  • Volunteers to give gardening hours

Denys Eyre Bower bequeathed Chiddingstone Castle and his collections for the nation’s enjoyment. The Castle’s grounds cover 35.5 acres including a 3.5 acre lake and offer fantastic views over the High Weald of Kent.

Natural elements like wind, lightening and dampness have laid a wonderful foundation for us to create a beautiful Japanese Stroll Garden. The trees leaning over the lake and abundance of mosses are prime examples.

Defining Japanese garden characteristics, including simplicity and naturalness abound at Chiddingstone. Nature has already shaped the landscape in preparation for our Stroll Garden!

Japanese influences in the grounds have been contributed by DEB’s friends over numerous years. These include; the Bridge over the lake, the Acer collection, Cherry trees and the construction of the Waterfall.

Here at Chiddingstone Castle we intend to build the first Japanese Garden of national importance since the early 1900’s. This will unite the grounds with Denys’s outstanding artefacts within the Castle: in other words, external works of art, with imagination, and craftsmanship.
